Welcome to the Centre for Agribusiness Policy & Strategy

The Centre for Agricultural Policy Studies was established in 1981, in association with the Department of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management. The Foundation Director was the late Dr Eric Ojala, QSO, BA, MAgrSc, DPhil, Hon DSc. The objectives of this Centre were to research national and international developments of significance to New Zealand’s agricultural sector along with appropriate domestic responses, and to promote discussion on such issues. Subsequent structural changes within the University have resulted in a new grouping of economists and agricultural economists. As a result, the Centre’s name was changed in 1995 to reflect the broadened research interests and skills of the University’s economists. At this stage, CAPS’ focus has extended to studies of international markets and policy developments of relevance to New Zealand’s natural resource-based industries. In 2009, CAPS became a College Centre within the College of Business, and renamed the Centre for Agribusiness Policy and Strategy. To achieve its objectives, CAPS undertakes and promotes research, publishes reports, sponsors seminars and workshops, and provides confidential reports and consultancy services to government and agribusiness organisations. The Centre’s work programme is funded through external grants and research contracts, and from University sources. Research within CAPS involves staff from the Department of Economics and Finance, often in collaboration with others from within the College of Business, elsewhere in the Univeristy and outside the University.
